Scotty’s Brewhouse

If you live in Central Indiana, you probably are no stranger to Scotty’s. At the very least, you’ve heard someone mention the name. This small chain restaurant is a celebrated icon of a restaurant in this area, and for very good reason. That said, I couldn’t pass over them in my reviews. Partly because they are just so damn good. Annnnnd, partly because Scott Wise himself send me a message earlier and asked me to tell him how the Burger of the Month was and I thought I’d do him one better.

So Scotty…this one is for you.

I got the weekly newsletter today with this picture.

And then I sent a message to Mr. M that basically went like this:  “DONUT BURGER OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG”

And an hour later we were both still thinking about it, so we decided to go to Scotty’s for dinner. Bonus:  Tonight was Pint Night. $2.50 for any of the 30 beers on draft.

Well, I can tell you this about that Donut Burger, Mr. Wise. The server brought it to the table. And it was gone before our waiter was able to make it back to ask us if everything came out OK. So maybe five minutes? Guys, that burger is crazy good.

Oh, and Mr. M had the new Sriracha burger–also amazing. His didn’t last long either.

We hit Scotty’s up every couple of months. We aren’t regulars, but we definitely go back often. Why? Because of everything. Seriously. The food is terrific–so creative. You’re never going to get bored with what they are offering here. My personal favorite is the Shewman Burger (PB, Jalapenos, Bacon…yessssssss). The beer is fantastic. They make it at the Broad Ripple location with a different name–Thr3e Wise Men. They have other beer on tap, but go with the Thr3e and you won’t be disappointed.

The service is almost always excellent. Something special about Scotty’s is the feedback system. There is a survey card in every bill. Take the time to fill those out. We’ve been told that the owner reads them–Mr. M even got an email back from him on one of them. Something else unique about Mr. Wise, he is VERY active on social media. We frequently get tweeted at when we comment about his restaurant. So he does pay attention to his customers, and for us, that is extremely important. It’s nice to be heard.

A bit of trivia–Scotty’s got started in Muncie, IN, where I went to college! Go Ball State! Chirp Chirp! They just announced that they will be opening a second Thr3e Wise Men up there too, which I think will be great for the downtown area.

If you haven’t checked out this local chain, you need to. They have several locations in the area:

I can’t stress enough how good this place is. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Happy Thursday!

Rivertown Brewing

Mr. M and I are big Cincinnati Reds fans. Or…I should say, Mr. M has always been a Reds fan, and I fell in love with them as I was falling in love with Mr. M. That’s a long story for another day. I really should tell you all how that happened some day.

Because Cincy is so close, we love taking day and weekend trips to our neighboring city as much as possible. People who think there isn’t anything to do in the Midwest just don’t know what to look for, in my opinion. We never run out of things to do locally, and we never have enough time on these trips to do everything we want!

On our first trip to Cincy together, we went to Jungle Jim’s (a huge international grocery store on the northside) and lucky for us they were doing a beer tasting of a Cincy brewery that neither of us had heard of before. This started a love affair that doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon, and sometimes borders on obsession when we talk about them.

A few months after that tasting, Hearthstone (still in its happy rotating tap days) brought in two experimental beers from Rivertown–a smokey campfire beer called War, and Death, one of the coolest…hottest….urm…neatest beers I’ve ever tasted. The beer starts out as a fantastically brewed Russian Imperial Stout, one packed with serious flavor that hits in all the right places. And then…THEN! You’re sitting there talking to your partner at the bar, chatting up the bartender about how good this beer is, and you start to feel something, riiiiight at the back of your palate. Whoa, what IS that?! That, my friend, is the ghost chili. Yes, you heard me right. They put GHOST CHILIS IN THEIR STOUT! Fantastic. It wasn’t an extreme heat, like you think it would be. Not that I would drink an entire bomber in one sitting, probably not more than a 10 oz-er at a time. But it was really rather pleasant.

Ok, now you’re getting the obsession that I mentioned? Well, after we had that beer we KNEW we had to visit their taproom. So in May, we got ourselves seats at an early Reds game, then hit Lochland afterwards. And were convinced we were lost. The first time we tried to find this place, we drove down this long, very sketchy neighborhood street that T-d into an industrial park. There were no signs on any of the buildings that showed any sign of life. And then suddenly…”FOODTRUCK!” We had arrived. Now, thank goodness, there is a big sign out front that shows the way, but the first time we were there, it didn’t exist.

One of the things I love about Rivertown is that this is not a fancy place. There’s a corrugated metal bar–it does have a wood top–with the taps coming out of the corrugated metal wall. The first time, all they had was a whiteboard telling us what was on tap, this time they had “fancy” wooden signs. Guests can sit or stand at cask barrel tables, and now they even have an extended picnic table room. There may be a food truck outside, or this last time there was a guy doing BBQ pork sandwiches. There’s a cat named Nugget roaming around like he owns the place. Tours are given once a day on Fridays and Saturdays, and I definitely recommend it. You learn a ton about the beer–how they make it, what’s different about their processes, and what’s coming up soon. Also, it only costs $5, and for that you get a pint of whatever you want to carry around with you, AND a clean pint glass to take home with you. Heck we might take the tour every time we go!

This is a place where people talk to each other. I think that’s my favorite thing about the craft beer world. You can make a friend out of anyone in taprooms. People just love to talk about beer. Don’t go in and be a snob, listen to the conversations around you and join in.

The beer I come back for here is their Winter Ale. This is the one we tried at Jungle Jim’s the first time we had it, and it blew our socks off. It’s a seasonal, and trust me, we craved it ALL year long. There’s a reason we made the trip this past weekend, before the season ended. And we made sure to get two growlers full while we were there. It’s spicy and slightly sweet with the molasses flavor they give it. The base is a sturdy amber to hold up under those flavors, and it just WORKS. I’m not ashamed to say we’ve already killed off one growler…

They also have a Belgian Strong called Fat Happy Monk that I’m REALLY hoping they bring back this summer. That’s was my favorite from the May line up we tried, and it was one of the first Belgians I fell in love with. Looking forward to having it again.

Unfortunately, this brewer is a little hard to find locally. Every once in awhile we will see their seasonal or Hop Bomber at our local grocery store. Liquor stores are a better bet, especially if they have a really big craft section. I’m always sure to keep my eye out for them, as I’ve yet to be let down from what they’ve put out.

Be sure to check them out if you are on the NW side of Cincy. It’s worth going out of your way for.

Happy Hump Day all!

Bier Brewery

The wonderful thing about a three day weekend is that I have an extra day to do chores. Normally, if I have nothing going on, Saturday is a day for complete and utter laziness. Sunday is laundry day, bathroom cleaning, sometimes kitchen cleaning and cooking prep if needed. However, with Monday being a holiday, I have a whoooooole extra day to watch Sherlock (yummy Benedick Cumberbatch). I am doing some laundry, but mostly I’m just being lazy while Mr. M works the closing shift.

And since I’m being lazy, I could find absolutely no reason why I shouldn’t have a beer at 2 pm. I’ve been wanting one since Thursday evening, when we made a run to Bier Brewery.

Bier is perhaps one of the lesser known breweries in town, because they don’t can or distribute their beer like Sunking or Upland, but they are probably my favorite. Because they brew in smaller batches, their beer is more creative and interesting. They have a very small tasting room, down on 65th, just off Binford. You can try anything you like on their 9 taps, before filling up your growler. They don’t do pints, except on Saturdays, so don’t go in expecting to get your rocks off in this place. But, I will tell you that you’ll want to take a couple growlers with you. One won’t be enough. Because if you buy only one, you’ll get it home, finish it, and wish you had more.

How do I know? Because Thursday, I tasted the Brett’s Stout. This is no ordinary stout. No, no. It’s a soured stout, something I had never imagined–the perfect combination of the dark, sturdy flavors, but with the sharp bitter flavor that I LOVE in a Belgian-style ale. It’s perfect. However, I wasn’t quite sure about it when I did the taste, so I just got a 32-oz bullet. Definitely not enough. I’m going to have to go back for more!

We also got a growler of their Belgian Dubbel and another of the Chocolate Mint Stout (shudder…that one is allllll for Mr. M).

You can bring in your own growlers to refill, or they sell their own. They also have bullets of course, as well as pint glasses, shirts, shot glasses. Typical brewery stuff. And, if you’re looking for a REALLY great gift (hint hint hint), they even have this hardcore industrial strength growler that you could pretty much run over with your car, and it keeps your beer cold for 24 hours. I sooooo want one for camping.

Alrighty, well, time for me to go back to watching Benedict save the day.

Drink up, my friends.

Mrs. M

Drakes, Indianapolis

Remember that plan I said I had for today? For some reason I thought that I could totally right a blog post after Girl’s Night. We were going to dinner at 6…I’d spend a couple hours with my friends, have one beer, and come home and write. Totally plausible. Right? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight…

Which is why it’s now 10:15 and I’m just now starting. This is me trying to stay awake until Mr. M gets off work at 11. Oh geez.

The reason I wanted to write this specific post tonight is because Girl’s Night was at one of my new favorite places in town:  Drake’s. This bar is fantastically unique. It’s a chain, but not one you see very many places. 7 locations in the Midwest, according to their website. Whoever thought this place up knew exactly what they were doing….or maybe they were just really drunk. Either way, it works in a very strange way. The walls are all wooden, kind of like a roadhouse type feel, and it’s all open seating…no hostess to tell you where to sit. And the seats themselves are boothlike, except there are no seat backs–it’s more like sitting at oversized picnic tables where the benches are butted up against the one next to it. Now, some people don’t like it because they don’t like sitting so close to strangers, but it has a very communal feel to it, and in a drinking atmosphere, it works, especially later in the night. It’s a bar! Socialize! In the summer they even have cornhole outside! This is not a sit down loaner keep to yourself type of place.

The other really crazy thing about this place is the food. Drake’s has a regular menu with what you’d expect–burgers, wings, nachos, etc. And all of that is pretty great. Or so I hear. I’ve never ordered any of it. Why? Because Drake’s has some of the best sushi for the price in Castleton. Whaaaaat?! In a roadhouse style bar? Absolutely. The fish is super fresh tasting, and the rolls are unique. My favorites are the surf and turf roll–crab meat on the inside and thinly sliced beef on top with a spicy sriracha type sauce on top, and this incredible take on a crab rangoon, which they’ve turned into a fried sushi roll! I had some of their raw sushi tonight too and it was pretty fantastic as well.

Another thing they offer are their beer towers. They have a couple different sizes, but if your table can agree on a type of beer, they are a really great deal. We had 60 oz of Blue Moon and it was only $17! Tell me that’s not a steal. Much better than buying it beer by beer. The price will vary depending on the beer you are buying, but they offer it in 60, 90, and 120 oz. They have a floater that they put in the tube to keep it all the way through, and basically it’s a pour your own tap. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. And any time I can get my friends to kiss a beer tower….that’s a good night.

Oh! One more thing–Don’t bring your kids here. There was a couple with really young kids, one in a high chair. I was surprised 1) that they were even allowed in, and 2) that Drake’s even HAD a high chair. The kids were obviously not enjoying themselves, and neither were the parents. This is a bar, folks, not a family restaurant. I’m not saying this because the family was bothering me or anyone else. I’m saying this only because I was very surprised to see the family there at all. There are soooooooo many awesome places to take your family….this isn’t one of them. The music is loud, guys are there to pick up women, the women are there for girl’s night so we are loud and WOOing, and it’s just…not kid appropriate in my opinion.

Check this place out if you are looking for a fun, lively place for dinner and drinks. The food is great, the service is friendly, and the beer is cold. The music gets loud after 9, but it IS a bar geared towards the mid-20s, so that’s to be expected. They do trivia some nights too, if that’s your thing. It’s a fun fun fun place to be when you’re in the mood to be fun fun fun!

Good night all! Mr. M should be home soon.

Duke’s Alehouse

Two months ago today, a little over an hour ago, this happened:

Image

It’s hard to believe that time has gone so fast. At the same time, it feels like so much has happened in the last 60 days. Mr. M has a new job, we moved, and I’m going through some changes at my job now too. Every day I just can’t believe how lucky I am to get to spend time with that handsome, sweet, intelligent man up there. He makes my world go ’round.

Because he was starting a new job in the middle of our wedding countdown, we weren’t able to go on a complete get away honeymoon. However, I did have time off, so I snuck off for a week to visit him during his training in Crystal Lake, IL. I was skeptical, but found plenty to do in this little suburb, and it ended up being a very relaxing week.

Image

I found my heaven. Seriously, I wish I could pack up this bar and transplant it here. Duke’s Alehouse is EVERYTHING I want in a bar, and I wish I could go there all the time. I told Mr. M I would move to CL just to be a regular at Duke’s. He didn’t go for that idea for some reason… *shrug*

You see this menu?

Image

I am not sure how often they update it, but that baby was FIVE PAGES LONG. It was as big as most restaurant food menus. They only have 21 beers on tap, but a 175 bottle collection. Now, I’m using the word “only” here in comparison to the bottle collection. Normally 21 would be an impressive amount of taps! When you open the menu, they have everything organized by style, and then it was labelled further by different designations. I wish I remembered them all now, but there was a legend to explain everything. Beer drinking is no longer just “Do you want Miller or Bud?” I love that.

While I could wax poetic about the beer for ages, I also need to stop and talk about the food. Guys, the food here is awesome. They get most of their products locally, and it shows. The menu is unique and flavorful. The fried pickles are the best I’d ever had. They were more like chunks than chips, so they were so juicy that they popped when you bit into them. I had fries that were smothered in bbq pork and cheese. Good lord they were incredible. I’m drooling over here just thinking about it.  I don’t totally remember what Mr. M had, but I want to say he had some kind of burger with an egg on it. I do remember he finished his food before I did.

Duke’s is a 3 Star Certified Green Restaurant, which essentially means they meet certain qualifications to be environmentally conscientious. There’s a lot more information about it on their website, but it’s a bit complicated for this girl to understand. I know it’s good….just a bit over my head.

If you are ever up NE of the Chicagoland area, check out Duke’s. It’s worth the trip to Crystal Lake. They have a cute little downtown area full of kitchy little shops, and I hear they have a lakeside area too, but we didn’t have a chance to check out the parks on this trip.

Have a great trip!

The Review I Don’t Want To Write

The title is a bit inaccurate. I’ve actually been wanting to write this review for a very long time. It’s one of the inspirations for the blog, actually. I’ve been giving reviews of this place orally for over a year–everyone I know has heard it.

However, they haven’t heard this version–they’ve heard the exact opposite. This is not the review I want to give, and I really don’t want to be sitting here writing it. Even sitting here, I’m thinking of trashing it altogether. But no, it needs to be said. They know me there for my blunt honesty about what they are serving–and that is my purpose here as well. Ok, enough about the cryptic rambling. Here goes:

We had a Place. Our McClarens. Our Cheers. Our place where the bartenders know us. For awhile, we were in there almost every weekend. We never get carded, and rarely do they take our tab until we are ready to cash out. We always sit at the end of the bar, and talk to the employees, laughing and talking about beer, life, and the idiot customers who come in and ask for “NASCAR beer.” That place is Hearthstone.

The place was great. The beer list would change weekly, and we race to be online to find out what was new. The guys behind the bar knew what our tastes were and were knowledgeable about what was on tap. They’d give us samples of what they thought we’d be interested in, and they were almost always right. I learned to love Belgians because of Hearthstone. Mr. M discovered his favorite stout, and several others.

But slowly, the beer list stopped changing as quickly. It would change ever couple of weeks, then a month, every two. And yes, we noticed. The regular beer drinkers that we loved to toss back opinions with trickled out.

But still we loved the place, the atmosphere. Even though one of our favorite people had left by then, we still loved the conversation, and our place at the end of the bar. We had our after parties for our rehearsal dinner and wedding there. We couldn’t imagine going ANYwhere else. This is our PLACE. And we were treated like royalty. We were applauded by everyone in the pub when we walked in with our wedding finery on, and received hugs from our favorite tap tender.

Start the dramatic music. Right around that time–I can’t remember if it was before or after the wedding–it was announced that Hearthstone was changing from our beloved coffeehouse/pub, to a “bistro.” They were turning into a restaurant. Um…what?

Ok, we said. Maybe this will just mean more food options. Mr. M was a little disappointed they were getting rid of his boneless wings, but *shrug* if that’s the biggest change then we’ll deal. Then the menus came out and we saw what they did to the beer list. Gone were the rotating taps altogether, except for a couple local seasonals…that we can get everywhere else in town. Immediately you saw the comment board on the website blow up with the displeasure of the customers, but the response was the same…”We promise you’ll like the changes.”

Well, we went last night. After a month of holding back, we just couldn’t wait anymore. And we did not like the changes. We walked in to a big wall of opaque glass where the coffee bar used to be. I actually audibly gasped. It was loud enough for people to turn around and look, and I’m not kidding, I almost walked back out–it was so unwelcoming. Deep breath…we went back to our place at the bar, sat down. The employees were in a mad scramble. Our normal guy was not there, off that night, so there was none of the great conversation we normally would have gotten. But even if he was there, I wonder if there would have been time, even though they weren’t that busy. You could tell everyone was just crazy busy trying to get the food out–food that in a normal restaurant would have been done in a kitchen, but is being done behind the bar in an oversized toaster oven and a microwave. This is how it’s always been done there, and for bar snacks is fine, but now that they are doing bistro food is just not really sufficient I don’t think. And there’s just not enough room for the increased waitstaff back there.

And it gets worse. We had been told that even though the draft list was not going to be rotating, that they would still carry cans and bottles of some good stuff. They also have had a pretty great liquor selection. However, another regular, an acquaintance of ours, came in while we were there and tried to order one of the previously stocked cans. “Nope, we no longer carry those.” So he tried to order a fantastic bourbon that Mr. M also loves that they have ALWAYS carried. Nope, no longer being served. The three of us just looked at each other like, “This is not OK…”

We didn’t stay long. We normally would have had a couple of drinks, but we had one and then stopped at the store on the way home instead. Why spend more money at the bar when we can buy better stuff at the store? No thanks. We will miss our place, and will probably look for another. Maybe the bistro concept will take them far with a certain crowd in Fishers. But for their original clientele–the craft beer drinkers? No way. We are long gone. Some probably are hanging out at 20Tap in Broad Ripple. That’s a bit far for the M’s on a regular basis. So until we find a better Place, we will drink at home.

I hate to have such a negative review so early in the blog. But just like I used to sit at the bar at Hearthstone and tell everyone what I thought of the beer I was drinking, I refuse to sit quietly by while you drink a Bud Light. There are so many better beers out there.

Beerfully Yours,

Mrs. M.

UPDATE 12/11/2013:

The owners just posted on the Hearthstone Facebook page that they are closing their doors, citing financial difficulties. They said that they Bistro change was unsuccessful and they were not able to save the place. I wish I could say I was surprised, but I’m sad to see it go.

Rhodell’s Brewery, Peoria IL

It is very fitting this first real post is about beer. If you know my husband and I, then you know we love our beer. From our very first date, when we both chose Bell’s Two Hearted off a very extensive beer list, it’s been good beer all the way. Where ever we travel, one of the first things we research is where the beer is. Can I say beer any more in this paragraph? Probably. Beer.

I was really looking forward to visiting Rhodell’s. We were originally going to go in early September, when I was visiting for our “honeymoon.” Unfortunately, that trip got moved to Crystal Lake. More on that trip in another post. So when Mr. M suggested I come east for this weekend, I knew we had to try out this brewery.

Image

Rhodell’s has a 10 tap line up that is always changing–on a weekly basis! That’s a lot of turnover, and it’s due to the creativity of the brew master. We were told that he is Scottish (“Watch your head!” said one of the bartenders), but brews heavily in the Belgian style. He didn’t have any on tap while we were there, much to my dismay, but what he did have was pretty good, and definitely unique. For example, there was a chocolate cherry stout, which I couldn’t have drank a lot of on its own, but I wanted a big scoop of vanilla ice cream for a beer float! Our favorites were the Imperial Autumn Sun (described as a imperial amber–to me it has the flavor profile of an IPA, without the bitter aftertaste) and the Pumpkin Flesh (kick of nutmeg, and not so sweet as a lot of pumpkins that have been out this season).

The two bartenders–especially Mariel–were very enthusiastic about what they were pouring, and they definitely knew their regulars. They also were friendly with us. One thing Mr. M and I like to do is to talk to everyone at the bar, and it wasn’t long before we felt like one of the gang. The regulars were eager to hear where we like to drink back home.

I’m excited to go back and try more of Mark’s creations. And at only a three hour drive, it’s definitely doable.

Check out Rhodell’s Brewery on their website or on Facebook. They are constantly updating their tap lists, so if you are in the area, hurry in! This is a must try!
